The U-shaped symbol refers to a coat of arms — the traditional framework for the visual representation of church and academic institutions. The semi-open, schematic outline of a coat of arms connects with but also transcends this legacy, opening up to the future.
Jesuit identity
The modernized IHS symbol embodies the essence of the institution’s purpose as a carrier of the mission of the Society of Jesus, as well as physical closeness to the key monuments of Ignatian legacy.
At the heart of the Church
The simplified image of a cardinal’s galero refers to the patron of the institution, Saint Roberto Cardinal Bellarmino, and by his example our faithfulness to the Holy Father and the Church. It also relates to the fact that we’re located in the centre of Rome.
Logo variants explained
Standard vertical version – recommended as the default solution for most cases.
Standard horizontal version – recommended as the default solution when the context (e.g. header height) suggests the natural use of the horizontal version.
Standard icon – to be used as an element of decoration and whenever the context does not allow using the version with a title.
Version to be used only as an icon or decorative element in the smallest formats when the IHS becomes illegible.
The white and black monochrome version allows the logo to be used in monochrome or high-contrast publications, e.g. on a dark background.
