The Jesuit students residing at the Collegio Bellarmino are privileged to immerse themselves in the rich academic landscape of Rome, a city renowned for its theological and intellectual heritage. The majority of our students pursue their studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University, the prestigious Jesuit university of Rome, widely recognized for its academic rigor and longstanding tradition of forming scholars, theologians, and leaders for the Church and society.

The Pontifical Gregorian University, founded originally as the Collegio Romano in 1551 by St. Ignatius of Loyola, stands as a global center of excellence in theology, philosophy, and ecclesiastical studies. It offers a diverse array of Licentiate and Doctoral programs, providing students with profound intellectual formation and fostering critical engagement with the contemporary challenges facing the Church. Among its highly regarded areas of study are theology, philosophy, canon law, church history, psychology, and sociology, among others. These programs allow students to explore the profound dimensions of faith, human experience, and service to others, preparing them to become leaders who can integrate intellectual rigor with pastoral care.

Diverse Opportunities in Rome

In addition to studying at our Jesuit university, students at Collegio Bellarmino have the unique opportunity to expand their academic experience by enrolling in courses at other esteemed institutions across Rome, depending on their interests and areas of expertise.

Many of our students pursue degrees at the Pontificio Ateneo Sant’Anselmo, a Benedictine institution renowned for its specialization in liturgy and sacraments. Sant’Anselmo’s faculty offers comprehensive programs in liturgical studies, sacramental theology, and monastic spirituality, equipping students to engage deeply with the Church’s liturgical life both academically and pastorally.

Similarly, the Pontificium Institutum Patristicum Augustinianum attracts Bellarmino students interested in Patristics and Early Christian literature. Known for its rigorous philological and theological focus, the Patristicum provides rich academic formation in the writings of the Church Fathers, the history of Christian thought, and the theological heritage of early Christianity, shaping students’ understanding of the Church’s tradition and its relevance today.

Several students have also pursued studies at the Pontificium Institutum Orientale, which focuses on the liturgies, theology, and history of Eastern Christian traditions. The Orientale provides a distinct environment where students engage with the rich heritage of Eastern Christianity, with experts in fields such as Byzantine and Syriac studies. This institute fosters dialogue between East and West, nurturing mutual understanding among diverse Christian traditions.

Further academic options include the Pontifical Lateran University, recognized for its robust programs in pastoral theology. The Lateran also houses the John Paul II Institute for Marriage and Family Sciences, where students delve into family ethics and pastoral care. With its challenging academic environment, the Lateran prepares students for leadership roles in both pastoral and academic settings.

Finally, students passionate about sacred music may study at the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music, a world leader in Gregorian Chant, sacred polyphony, and liturgical music. Offering licentiate and doctoral programs in areas like choral direction, composition, and organ performance, the institute blends academic learning with practical training, ensuring the preservation and advancement of the Church’s rich musical tradition.
